Siddhivinayak Temple
Mumbai is one of the most visited cities of India, with its countless attractions and diverse culture. Among the major attractions this beautiful city is the famous Sri Siddhivinayak Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, also known as Ganpati. It is a major pilgrimage of Hindu religion, though tourists of all other religions who visit Mumbai do not miss this temple as a destination in the city.

About the Temple

Sri Siddhivinayak Temple is considered as one of the most magnificent and famous Hindu temples of India. It lies in the heart of Mumbai city and is frequented not only by the locals and tourists, but also some of the most famous Bollywood stars and politicians, who visit the temple on a regular basis. The majestic granite and marble temple dates back to 1801 and was built by a childless woman called Deubai Patil, an ardent devotee of Lord Ganesha. The popular belief is that the childless women who visit the temple to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha are granted the boon of progeny. Siddhivinayak, itself means Ganesha who grants the wished of his worshippers, which is the reason why the temple gets its name. The temple has a small mandap or hall, which holds the shrine of Siddhi Vinayak, while the wooden doors of the sanctum have the images of the Ashtavinayak carved over it. The inner roof of the main sanctum is embellished with gold and has the idol of Lord Ganesha placed in it, which is quite unique from all other idols of the deity found anywhere else in the country. The distinctive thing about the idol is that its trunk is placed on the right. The main idol is flanked by the idols of Goddesses Riddhi and Siddhi, who represent success, wealth, sanctity and prosperity. The legend goes that two divine idols were buried right in front of the presiding deity in the temple by Ramakrishna Jambhekar Maharaj, who was a disciple of the Hindu guru Swami Samarth. The Guru had made a prediction that a mandar tree would grow at the place where the idols were buried 21 years later and the prophecy turned out to be true, with a tree manifesting at the spot, along with a svayambhu Ganesha in its brances. This led to a phenomenal increase in the devotion and popularity of Sri Siddhivinayak Temple. Today, with millions of devotees flocking the temple every year, it has become one of the richest temples in India.
