The Dakshineshwar Kali Mandir dates back to the 19th century and it was constructed by Rani Rashmoni, an ardent devotee of Goddess Kali and a philanthropist. The exact date of construction is established between 1847 and 1855. The name of the Dakshineshwar Kali Mandir is also associated with that of the famous missionary saint Ramakrishna Paramhansa and it is said that the temple was the place from where he embarked on his religious journey. The magnificent temple features the Nav Ratna style of architecture, a traditional style native to Bengal. The main temple is 100 feet high and is surrounded by a large courtyard, which has some rooms located along the boundary walls. An idol of Ma Bhavatarini with her foot placed over Lord Shiva, is housed in the main temple. There are a total of 12 shrines located in the temple courtyard and these are dedicated to Shiva. Additionally, there is a bathing ghat located across the river, along with a shrine of Rani Rashmoni, who built the temple. There is also a chamber called Nahavat Khana in the north western part of the Dakshineshwar Kali Mandir and this was the place where Ramakrishna Paramhansa used to reside. Though Dakshineshwar Kali Mandir remains thronged by devotees throughout the year, October is the most auspicious month to visit it. The ritual of Kali Puja is carried out here at this time of the year and the devotees of Maa Bhavatarini gather here to seek her blessings so that they can be freed of all their problems and worries.
